Hyoshigi is a traditional Japanese instrument that uses two wooden blocks struck together to create a sharp sound similar to the Latin clave instrument. These are made with durable white oak which creates an ideal, loud clack.
Comes standard with braided red and white cord or can be customized with any two colors available. Hyoshigi are handmade to order so please allow two weeks for shipping. Please specify colors for custom cord at checkout.
Often used in Kabuki and Bunraku theater to signal the beginning of a performance as well as various sound effects. Fireman and night patrolman would also use the piercing sound to alert townspeople to emergencies. Hyoshigi are now used in taiko to help keep tempo and also to add another unique sound to the ensemble.
